A Friend in need...

I feel a heavy obligation to post something new here. But I don't have much going right now, or at least anything too controversial that will inspire witty, derogatory, defensive, or even neutral comments. Sorry to disappoint.

So my good friend Greg just broke up with his girlfriend of 5 years. Tough stuff. But, I'm really proud of him for doing it. Don't get this confused. I liked his girlfriend, I liked the two of them together, they really seemed to have helped each other through high school and the years right after it. They had a very comfortable relationship. And it could probably have lasted for quite a bit longer. But what guts to really look at it and recognize it for what it is. And for what it's not. And to take "appropriate" action from there. Five years is a significant investment in anything. That's as much of a habit as anything. Imagine having to break a pattern of doing something that you've been doing for that long. Like driving a certain route, or calling someone every day/week, or meeting someone for lunch, or going to church with someone... So I'm really sad for Greg. But this is a huge step in his personal growth. How he handles the next days, weeks, months will be very telling. I hope I can be a support for him. God knows he's been a major support in my life.

  • Greg's a cool guy. I remember one of the first times I ever met him. Way back at NCYC. He was one of the quietest kids I'd ever known, and then he drank something like 4 mountain dews and became extra lively. That was funny. (See, you prompted a response).

  • Yes, recognizing a friendship (or anything) over a relationship is hard, especially when one of the persons refuses to accept it for that. Greg is pretty cool, and I never thought those two would be apart, not after 5 years. But then again, relationships are weird like that.

  • Wow. My mom was like, "Doesn't Greg have a girlfriend" when she saw him at the wedding this weekend. I thought so, but this certainly is news. I hope they can stay strong and move on without any bad feelings. It's gotta be really hard after 5 years...
